Here we go......

Here we go day 1
Austin and Devon’s Road Trip
Aug. 3, 2010

Up at the crack of dawn, we start preparing the car for takeoff. We fill up with gas, get our drinks and head out. It is 6:45 a.m. Casi was up at 3:30 a.m. READY TO GO.

A foggy morning in Indiana.

Devon watching Scooby Doo

Austin watching Scooby Doo

Casi playing Jewel Quest

Not more than 25 miles down the road, we hit something. It damages the underside of the car. A state trooper helps us. He writes us an insurance report so if we have enough damage the insurance company needs to help us, it will be reported.

Austin is a worry wart, so much so he doesn't want to watch his movie any more. I can already tell it is going to be an interesting trip. Intrastate 69... Surprises await everyone.

A little way down the road we turn the DVD back on....It's in Spanish! Now we all know that craziness awaits us today.

Casi is sitting in the back seat, she is grinning a big ole grin. She wants to know if there are any good back roads to drive. She is already ready to take her turn at the wheel. Dad and I suggest the Dragon in North Carolina. Lucky for her we are not near there.

First of many road changes.

Heading to Louisville,Kentucky.

At 9:30 we stopped at a rest area to let the boys run and eat a snack - goldfish crackers, Oreo cookies, ham sandwiches, cherries along with Pepsi products to drink. Devon ran for about 15 minutes, round and round.
Austin joined in and they tried racing. Of course the age difference gave Austin the advantage. Austin was excited about the stop thinking there may be a geo cache located there. We only have OnStar, we didn't bring the GPS. I promised I would try to find a geo along the trip, but no guarantees we would find it.

Our first stop.

Devon happy for a break.

Devon running round and round on the sidewalk.

Devon lap 50

But I like to run.

Austin the cookie monster.

Austin just being Austin.

Grandpa joining in on the race.

Austin running hard.

Back in the car and headed to Louisville, Kentucky. Austin and Devon are watching MacGyver season 1--- first time ever. They are enjoying it. Casi is watching the scenery and thinking about when she will get a turn at driving.

Devon finally crashes for the first time.

Finally we are in Kentucky.

Austin continues to watch MacGyver. He looks up, saw the Ohio River, "Wow" is his reaction to the water and Louisville. He thought we were in New York. After our maneuvering around the turns and entrance-exits we were headed to Lexington.

Austin is excited once more when we went through the tunnel.

It is now 10:45 a.m. Lunch time in a few hours. I have been playing Jewel Quest and typing on my computer. I have also worked on my family tree information. Grandpa is driving. He is so great when it comes to doing the driving.

It is 11:37 a.m., we have stopped at another rest area, a potty break and snacks of grapes, cherries and Pepsi products. Grandpa is looking over his maps and planning a driving route for Casi. He is also looking for a route that will take Austin and Devon into the "real" Tennessee country side and to me to Newport for my genealogy research. The boys are having fun in chasing butterflies, talking maps with grandpa and looking at all the big trucks.

Grandpa getting out his maps.

Grandpa showing Austin the new route.

Austin and Devon gazing at the trucks.

Austin eating grapes.

Austin the butterfly catcher.

Heading back out. Looking for exit 59. 12:57 p.m. and we have just stopped for gas and something quick to eat. We eat at the Waffle House. Everyone eats all that is on their plates!

Back on the road once more. Still looking for exit 59. Devon is wound up like an 8-day clock. All and all the boys have been doing a good job of riding in the car. We just took exit 59 and Casi's turn to drive. It is 2:11 and Casi has been doing a great job of driving. This road is super curvey, with lots of big hills and beautiful scenery. Casi says she is about done driving this road; they are nerve racking and scary, especially when you are first learning to drive.

Holy cow, check out this tunnel. It was about 1 mile long.

We just stopped at a McDonald's to get an unsweetened tea for both Casi and me. I do believe that the store owners of the ones in our home town area are the only ones that do not use styrofoam cups for their unsweetened tea.

Wow we have just found a place we have never been before; South 25E. Check out the scenery. Also this place has two historical markers.

Snikers, we just saw two buildings that will catch anyone's attention. They are Barbie pink and lemon yellow. I think they are beautiful clean colors, but I don't think I would paint my house pink.

We are now in Newport,Tennessee. Here are a few scenes. And yes that is Thomas the Train on top of the building. Devon discovered it as we were checking out the town.

We are staying at the Family Inn in Newport, Tennessee. Supper in the room. Sandwiches, chips, fruit and Pepsi products. Austin, Grandpa and Devon spend about 3 hours in the pool. Casi wants to go to Walmart and then we come back to the pool. Of course the boys didn't want to get out of the water. Devon still does not believe us that we are in Tennessee because he has not seen a bear! Enjoy the rest of the pictures from the evening. This is the end our day 1.
